July 2008 - HorseTail Scramble Success
|
 |
A beautiful day made for a pleasant 4th of July in the Copper Country and another fun and successful HorseTail Scramble for the Keweenaw Land Trust. Mike Dziobak ran the challenging 10 km course on the woodland trails of Churning Rapids in the winning time of 42:25 with Joan Rundman the top female finisher in 47:32 in a field of about 30 racers, while another 40 people hiked or ran along 5 km of trails to build up an appetite for the amazing feast that has become a tradition at this event. Race results for the 10 km Trail Run are posted below. Terry Kinzel defended his title in the banana eating contest while Al Toczydlowski and Mike Gage mastered the water balloon toss. Everyone ended up a mess in the pie eating contest. The biggest winner was the KLT Land Stewardship Fund. Scramblers more than met the sponsor’s match to raise a total of nearly $5,800 that will build this important endowment intended to meet the long-term obligations of caring for lands that the Trust owns as preserves and monitoring conservation easements held to permanently protect family and privately owned land. The Trust thanks the generous sponsors who supported this year’s HorseTail Scramble: Portage Health, ThermoAnalytics, Mike Lahti Properties, Edward Jones–Steve Zutter, Citizen’s Bank, and Kavorik Family Dentistry. We also thank Terry Kinzel and Sue Ellen Kingsley for all they do to make this event possible and for sharing in so many ways to enrich our community at large. Plan now to attend next year – same day, same place, same good music and fun – regardless of whether we have another nice day on the 4th of July or not.
