Jan. 2009 - KLT Outings - A Great Success
|
 |
The first in a new series, KLT Outings, was a great success. On Saturday, January 10th, biology teacher and trained animal tracker Brian Raijdl led the Animal Tracking Outing at KLT's Paavola Wetlands Preserve, with community members exploring the woods for obvious and hidden signs of animal life. It was both informative and fun, with great insights into the world of tracking, and hands on experience excavating tracks and signs in the snow, deciphering claw marks on bark, thinking like a rabbit or a deer. We learned how to distinguish male and female deer tracks based on the placement of front and hind feet, and how to tell which way a wolf was looking by slight shifts in foot placement. For more details on the tracking outing, see the cover story in the Daily Mining Gazette (http://www.mininggazette.com/page/content.detail/id/503340.html). There will be two Outings in February: Skiing and snowshoeing at Churning Rapids, followed by a potluck dinner and music at the American Legion (Feb. 21st); and Ice Fishing for Kids at Marsin, February 28th. Stay tuned for more details. Send an e-mail to Erik Lilleskov (elillesk@mtu.edu) if you would like to be on the KLT Outings mailing list, with the subject line "outings mailing list".
