Working for balance in our community
Keweenaw Land Trust favors balancing economic health with natural and cultural resource protection, and promotes a balance of private land uses with opportunities for public access. The Land Trust supports sustainable forestry, traditional uses such as hunting and fishing, camping and hiking, and tourism that values all the resources the area has to offer.

Keweenaw Land Trust primarily serves the counties of Keweenaw, Houghton, and Baraga in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but also work with landowners in Iron, Ontonagon and Gogebic counties.

Responsible and Ethical Operations
The Keweenaw Land Trust is governed by a dedicated volunteer board of directors drawn from members of the community, and has a committed permanent staff. Bylaws and appropriate policies, sound management, and board oversight contribute to a strong and enduring organization. The Trust adheres to the high standards and recommended practices of the Land Trust Alliance, a national organization that provides ethical and practical guidelines for land trusts.

Fiscal Management

• Finance Committee
  Guided by Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices and the assistance of community professionals, the KLT Finance Committee provides oversight and recommendations to the Board of Directors on fiduciary matters.
   
• Obtain and Manage Funds
  As with most nonprofit organizations, the Keweenaw Land Trust relies on public and private support to carry out its mission. Fundraising events, such as an annual trail run and a family ski race, contribute to the Trust's vitality and allow people of all ages to help support land conservation efforts. All fundraising is done in an ethical manner, respecting the privacy and intent of our members and donors.
   
• Dedicated Endowments
  Keweenaw Land Trust is supported by several dedicated endowment funds. An Organizational Endowment supports general operations. Some of these funds are managed by the Keweenaw Community Foundation in a KLT-Designated fund. The Land Stewardship Fund provides funds for long-term monitoring and legal fees. The Marsin Endowment, named for donor Mary Sinish, supports the Marsin Nature Retreat Center.

Partnerships and Community Involvement
By working with units of government and like-minded organizations such as the Houghton/Keweenaw Conservation District, the Michigan Nature Association, The Nature Conservancy, Copper Country Audubon Club, and the Lake Superior Land Trust Partnership, the Trust is strengthened in achieving its goals. The Trust adheres to the high standards and recommended practices of the Land Trust Alliance, a national organization that provides ethical and practical guidelines for land trusts across the continent. The Keweenaw Land Trust staff attends the national conferences of the LTA, and consults regularly with professional colleagues in land trusts across the country.
